Building history
34 Peckham Road, a grade II listed building was previously part of the progressive psychiatric hospital known as Camberwell House.
Camberwell House opened in 1846 and by 1878 it was the largest asylum in London and several cottages were built in the grounds so some patients could experience a degree of independence. By the late 1800s Camberwell House had expanded into the Georgian houses on the south side of Peckham Road (including 34 Peckham Road).
Camberwell House had large gardens and great emphasis was placed on exercise and outdoor activities including gardening and art.
Artefacts discovered in the gardens include gardening tools, keys, old paint tubes, spoons with embossed 'Camberwell House' or 'CH' motifs, pieces of ceramic and wedding bands.
